All colours of the rainbow

This painting has been done with Stabilo 68 pens used as watercolour pens. I watched a video a few days ago telling me that you could dilute the ink of the pens with water, and as I am a very curious person I just did that. The Stabilo 68 pens can be bought in almost every paper store here in Germany for a very reasonable price. I like the vivid colours you get when you wet them, and how you can vary the opacity.

I mixed the colours on the paper – however I heard about another method of colour mixing: use an acrylic surface, scribble on this surface and then use it as a kind of palette.

Happy Colours – Finished

This is the final version of the “Happy Colours” piece. I used Stabilo and Staedtler pens and drawing cardboard as support. All in all it took more than a week to do it – either in the morning at the breakfast table or in the early evening when I had returned from work.

Happy colours – work in progress

Happy colours

This piece is hand-drawn and coloured with Stabilo and Staedtler pens. Although spring is round the corner we aren’t seeing many spring colours here in Berlin at the  moment. So I thought to create my own happy colours…

Fancy Face

I have a subscription for the newsletter from Dover publications, and one advantage of this newsletter is that you get access to free colouring pages samples every Friday. I did this with a variety of markers – alcohol markers and markers with waterbased ink. I chose simple copy paper mainly for the reason that the colouring page can easily be printed.

Movement

Movement

Yesterday I suddenly felt like experimenting with my cheap Acrylic paints. With experimenting I mean trying out colour mixing, experimenting with how much water and how much paint to load on my brush and things like that. I really didn’t intend to create a painting.

But things happen, and suddenly a painting began to emerge. The good thing with acrylics is that you can paint over your painting until you are satisfied. Of course I learnt a lot about colour mixing as well – that you can darken your green by adding the complimentary colour, red. That you can glaze and make the first layer still shining through; that you can create opaqueness by adding a speck of white, and, and, and. I also made the experience that I could totally dive into the world of colours and shapes and forget everything around me – a beautiful experience!

Crazy effects and wild colours on Zazzle

November is here, and the colours of fall have disappeared. But here are some wonderful crazy coloured products from Zazzle. They will raise your mood when you look at them, and if you buy them they will be yours to look at whenever you want it and need it…

The Birth of a Dragon

The birth of a dragon. Watercolour pencils and coloured pencils.

I am still experimenting with using watercolour pencils wet and coloured pencils on one piece. I love the cheerful and strong colours which I can get with applying wet watercolour pencils. I noticed that there is a difference between the results of using a brush to go over the pigments of the watercolour pencils and a q-tip. With the latter you can have more pressure on the pigments, getting a stronger colour. On the other hand I hate to produce unnecessary litter…

I also noticed that you can mix more easily with wet watercolour pencils. You can even use black to darken colours. I would not use black dry, but with water you can get a very dark brown putting black over brown.

Abstract with figure

Abstract with figure. Coloured pencils on watercolour paper. Ulla Hennig July 2013

I finished this abstract yesterday. I had no particular reference for it. I was interested in the contrast between something more specific like a human figure and geometrical shapes, and I wanted to play with shades of blue, green and red.

This time I used a small brush for applying the baby oil instead of using q-tips. Besides that I went with colour pencils over some of the areas again. Interesting!

Fire

Fire Being. Digital Painting done with Artrage. Ulla Hennig March 2013

It can be a witch, or a firedragon or anything else you see in it. Whatever it is, it is full of life and energy and power.

It is done with the oil brush tool in Artrage.

Wild colours

Wild colours. Watercolour pencils used wet and dry on watercolour paper, Ulla Hennig, April 2012

I hope you don’t think I’ve gone mad, but somehow I could not resist. No reference. I placed various glasses and other round objects on the watercolour paper, went around them with a pencil in order to get circles. Then I coloured them with dry watercolour pencils and applied a wet brush. At the very end I applied some dry coloured pencils. It was fun!
