Shades of Blue

Shades of Blue. Opaque watercolours, July 2015

This is the third painting in my series of abstract opaque watercolour paintings. The yellow background has been painted with a stabilo 68 pen.

I had much fun trying out all the blues of my 24 colour set. I used a waterbrush together with a normal waterolour painting brush. I noticed that it a bit difficult to mix the glues in the palette, so I mixed them in the paint pan (yes, I know, it’s a no no, but it is okay to mix them in the palette if you want light, translucent colours, but if you want the colour to be strong and opaque it is a bit difficult, due to the lesser pigmentation of the paint).

What I find interesting is the contrast you can get by combining a watermedium and markers resp. felt pens. The latter produces a rather flat colour, whereas with watercolours you can create highlights and shadows more easily.

About Ulla Hennig

I live and work in Berlin. Taking photos is one of my hobbies, and writing is one of my hobbies, too. So I decided not only to show some of my pictures here but also present some of the thought which came wth the pictures.
