Hyacinth - Photo: Ulla Hennig
The hyacinth is a flower which we associate with spring. And we are in the beginning of winter – so it’s a bit out of place, you will think. But
- did you know that hyacinths are associated with rebirth? We are 31 days away from 2009, from a New Year, and the time before the New Year is often used for thinking about old year and the coming one, thinking about our goals for 2008 and 2009.
- that blue has been elected the “color of the Year 2008″ by Pantone?
- that blue is believed to keep the bad spirits away? Some people believe that the nights in November are full of bad spirits, so blue is a wonderful color at that time of the year.
Which color is your favorite one? Let’s talk!

Well, my first answer would be purple, but in truth I’m addicted to all the colors and only wish I had more evolved eyes that could see more than the currently visible spectrum!
I just finished putting up a few strings of tiny golden holiday lights outside with several maroon ribbons. Did I say I like gold and deep red this time of year?
That’s a gorgeous photograph. Very vibrant! I love hyacinths. This fall I planted about 20 of them. Can’t wait to see them in the Spring.
Ulla, the photograph is beautiful! One of my best friends is named Hyacinth so the flower always reminds me of her.
I love the color blue, it is soothing and calming. It reminds me of the ocean which is one of my favorite places. I never tire of it and can surround myself with it daily but my favorite color is red. Yes, the polar opposite of blue! I suppose the blue brings balance to my life of red.
Ulla, thank you for the background about blue, etc. Did not know any of that. It’s hard for me to choose a favorite color in the abstract. Depending on my mood I might say blue or green or brown. But I love the sharp blue sky in the Colorado Rockies, and the red of a particular sweater my wife often wears, and the glistening yellow of bales of hay reflected in the early morning light. Whoa, I better stop before I break into a poem.
For me, color is all about the context.
Such a beautiful image Ulla. I love the color and the flower, always spring in my mind, but how glorious it feels to see one right now.
Thanks.
Hi Ulla – I love your photograph. It’s gorgeous. I also like the color blue. I love the combination of blue and white and use it in decorating. It’s always so “clean” looking.
Hi Ulla,
I just profiled your blog and praised your site for my readers. Keep up the great photography and musings.

As a child I recall being fascinated with the deep blue coloured glass bottles that were displayed in pharmacist’s windows. I would stare at them for what seemed like hours.
I was never very interested in churches as a child, but the stained-glass windows had an attraction for me, if and only if they had blue glass in them. Again, I would peer at a blue-glass window for ages, looking into that deep sombre colour.
Pale blue is refreshing – a colour that hails fine weather and calm skies. It is relaxing. But I find deep blue is sombre and almost sinister in a clinical way. Goodness knows why!

I do like this picture – really beautiful close-up.
Thanks for your comment on my German Christmas market photo. I really like the German gingerbreads – my favourites though are those soft gingery biscuits with white icing (what are they called?). It’s a good thing I’m not in Germany right now as I would be huge, unable to resist temptation!
